Winsor & Newton Artists' Oil Painting Varnish
Varnishes are essential for the protection of finished oil paintings from the build-up of dirt and grease. Available in different finishes, matt, satin and gloss, it is important to wait until oil paintings are thoroughly dry before varnishing. All Varnishes are removeable with mineral spirits or turpentine so that paintings may be cleaned in the future. Paintings must be thoroughly dry (at least 6–12 months) prior to application.

Dammar Varnish - pale yellow varnish which dries to a high gloss finish. For use on oil and alkyd paintings. It tends to darken with ageing and is removable with distilled turpentine. It is quick drying.
Retouching Varnish - UV resistant gloss varnish which gives temporary protection to recently completed oil paintings.
It is recommended to check the painting surface before varnishing be gently rubing white spirit (mineral spirits) to a clean cloth. If no colour comes free, the painting is ready for varnishing.
Application - Varnishes may be applied by brush or by aerosol spray. For a satisfactory surface finish and to minimize exposure to any solvents within the mixture, Winsor & Newton does not
recommend the application of varnish by hand and rag.
