Claessens provides artists with professional quality canvases traditionally woven from 100% pure flex (Linen). Each specific primed linen type is passed through its own set of manufacturing steps and quality control, resulting in premium painting surfaces Claessens is renowned for. After receiving the raw linens, quality control carefully inspects the entire surface for weaving faults. Abnormally thick threads are scrupulously removed. Next, two layers of synthetic adhesive are applied. Each layer is dried on the canvas in a warm-air oven.

For oil primed canvases, zinc white is used as the first coat, bound with linseed oil; carefully applied to the glued linen with trowel-like knives. Then the canvas is sanded and a layer with a white titanium base is applied in the same fashion, then placed in a drying room for 3 days to air dry naturally. Double primed canvases undergo the same process again, as do additional priming’s. After the final coating is applied, the canvas is moved back to the drying room for 10 days.

The finished canvases are then again carefully inspected one last time and carefully rolled up and wrapped in damp proof paper.

Nr. 13 - Claessens Linen features a very fine texture and a double layer of primer for oil and alkyd painting. It accepts most styles of painting, but is the ideal choice for portrait, troupe l’oeil and realist artists who enjoy the very fine surface it offers. Warp 23cm/23cm weft; Weight 325 GSM

Nr. 66 - This medium texture, heavyweight linen will readily support larger works and heavier paint layers. Suitable for oil paint only. This tighter woven linen canvas has a fairly smooth, medium texture and a tight weave for strength. Warp 17 cm / 14.5 cm weft; Weight 460 GSM

Nr. 706 - Claessens’ lighter portrait grade linen, has a fine texture and smooth surface. Use it for smaller portraits and other richly detailed works. Warp 23 cm / 17 cm weft; Weight 300 GSM
